A juniper native to the Rocky Mountains and Northwestern Great Planes. Similar to Juniperus virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar) with several important distinctions:
- Grows to a smaller nature height (~20-30 ft.) and spread (~8-12 ft.)
- Grows at a slower rate (approximately 1 ft. per year)
- Retains its color throughout the year
- Much less tolerant of shade and more susceptible to disease related to humidity
- Features more upright branching designed to shed snow more efficiently, allowing for less snow breakage
