Chamaecyparis obtusa, also known as Hinoki Cypress, is a slow growing evergreen with dark red-brown bark and dark green foliage. 

Uses
The Japanese White Cedar is used in traditional Japanese building, a popular ornamental tree, and is often used in the bonsai arts.

Wildlife Value
The wildlife value of the Japanese white cedar is limited to bird cover during winter months.  The tree is deer-resistant and offers no known foliage edibility.

History & Lore
Native to Japan and Taiwan, it is a sacred tree with revered timber used in architecture since at least 710 AD.  One of Japan's oldest wooden structures, The Horyuji Temple showcases its long-standing use in craftsmanship.
