Notes
The Gymnocladus dioicus is adaptable to a variety of soils.  Also known as American coffee berry, Kentucky mahogany, nicker tree, and stump tree, it is a tree in the subfamily Caesalpinioideae of the legume family Fabaceae.  The tree yields seed pods that are 5-10" long and green in color, turning brown, that persist through the winter.

Uses
The picaresque profile makes the Kentucky Coffee Tree and excellent ornamental tree for large areas.

Wildlife Value
While the Kentucky Coffee Tree offers some habitat and food for certain species, it's not a major food source for most wildlife.

History & Lore
This tree gets its name because early Kentucky settlers noticed the resemblance of its seeds to coffee beans. In earlier times, its wood was used in the construction of railway sleeper cars.
