Lawson Cypress

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, also known as the Port Orford cedar, is a tall ornamental evergreen with a narrow conical shape.  It has short sprays of soft feathery, silver-blue foliage that turns steel-blue in the winter.

Uses
The Lawson's cypress is used as a popular ornamental tree for hedges and privacy screens due to its dense growth.  With its durability and resistance to decay, even in salt water, it is valued in construction, boatbuilding, and musical instruments.

Wildlife Value
This tree serves as a habitat for for a variety of birds.

History & Lore
In its native range, the Karuk people used its branches to build sweat lodges and ceremonial houses and made brooms from them.
